MARATHON NO.13; SOUTH YORKSHIRE FOR MENINGITIS RESEARCH
For my 13th marathon, I’m running through South Yorkshire, to raise awareness for Meningitis—a life-threatening disease that can strike suddenly and change lives in an instant. I’m proud to support the Meningitis Research Foundation, a charity dedicated to funding research, supporting families, and working towards a future free from meningitis.
What is Meningitis?
Meningitis is a dangerous infection that causes inflammation of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, with bacterial meningitis being the most severe form—capable of causing sepsis, brain damage, and even death within hours. The disease progresses rapidly, often starting with flu-like symptoms, fever, headaches, sensitivity to light, and a stiff neck, but without urgent treatment, it can lead to devastating consequences. Survivors may be left with life-changing after-effects, such as hearing loss, seizures, or limb loss due to sepsis-related complications.
Why am I running for Meningitis?
Meningitis doesn’t wait, and it doesn’t discriminate—it can affect anyone, but babies, young children, and teenagers are most at risk. Including me; I had the condition at a very young age and very luckily came out alive and healthy. So I’m running this marathon to raise awareness and funds because early diagnosis and vaccination save lives, yet many people still don’t recognize the warning signs in time. By raising awareness, I hope to help more people spot the symptoms, act fast, and protect themselves and their loved ones from this devastating disease.
What is the Meningitis Research Foundation and what does it do?
The Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) is a leading charity dedicated to defeating meningitis. They fund research, provide support for families affected, and work to improve access to vaccines worldwide. Their goal is to create a future where no one dies from meningitis and where survivors receive the best possible care and support.
How does Meningitis Research Foundation help people with Meningitis?
Your donation has a direct impact.
£10 helps provide educational materials to raise awareness of meningitis symptoms.
£25 funds support services for families affected by meningitis.
£50 contributes to life-saving research into better treatments and faster diagnosis.
£100+ supports global vaccination programs, helping to protect vulnerable communities.
Meningitis is fast, deadly, and often strikes without warning—but with awareness, research, and vaccines, we can help prevent. This is Marathon #13, but for families facing meningitis, their battle is one of survival, loss, and resilience. Let’s stand with those who weren’t as lucky as me, run for them, and contribute towards a world where no one has to suffer from this terrible disease.
Please donate; I’ll see you soon South Yorkshire where I will run my socks off in pure appreciation of life.
