For my 11th marathon, I’m in Derbyshire, running to raise awareness for Encephalitis, a serious and often life-threatening brain condition. I’m supporting Encephalitis International, a charity dedicated to helping those affected, funding research, and spreading awareness to improve early diagnosis and treatment.

What is Encephalitis?

Encephalitis is a rare but severe inflammation of the brain, often caused by infections or an autoimmune response. It can strike anyone, at any age, and its effects can be devastating. Symptoms range from flu-like illness and confusion to seizures, memory loss, personality changes, and even coma. In severe cases, it can lead to permanent brain damage or be fatal. Many people who survive Encephalitis face a long and challenging road to recovery, often struggling with lifelong cognitive, physical, and emotional difficulties.

Why am I running for Encephalitis?

Most people have never heard of Encephalitis—until it happens to them or someone they love. Including what happened in our family; to my Great Aunt who was one of the strongest people I’ve known lost her battle with this horrible condition in 2023 with it also initially being misdiagnosed. I didn’t know about the condition until this occurred but with up to 6,000 cases in the UK each year, this condition is more common than many realize. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical, yet many cases go unrecognized until it's too late. I’m running this marathon to shine a light on Encephalitis, ensuring more people understand the symptoms, the urgency of treatment, and the impact it has on survivors and their families.
