I am Kay Hooft Graafland 18 years old and I am in South Africa for my gap year. I am working as a volunteer at the Marataba Conservation Park. On the fifth of March we are going to run half a marathon through the Marakele National Park to raise money for the Marataba Community Conservation Foundation (known as MCCF). It is a non-profit organization working in the area of Marakele National Park located in the Waterberg region of the Limpopo province in South Africa.
MCCF’s focus within the area has two intertwined channels, aiming to support long term sustainability of the area, its communities and wildlife;
- Nature conservation in the broadest sense through the support and stimulation of projects in the area which have a direct benefit to nature conservation;
- Education and development for the communities surrounding the area of Marakele is both needed and necessary to help people in the region. By demonstrating the importance and relevance of nature, our hope is to forge a sustainable relationship between people and nature for years to come
