Salut !

Simon

Hi! My name is Simon Niklaus, I'm 33 years old. I work as a nurse aide and substitute teacher in Biel, Switzerland.

In 2018 I discovered mountaineering and knew straight away that I had found my path.
Everything else has organised itself around it ever since: nearly 50 different 4,000 m peaks in the Alps. Ama Dablam (6,812 m) in Nepal in 2023. Aconcagua (6,962 m) in January 2025, climbed with full logistical autonomy, without a guide and without a porter.
In October 2025 I attempted Annapurna IV (7,525 m) alongside Sophie Lavaud. On summit day I found myself alone after my Sherpa stopped lower down. I kept going for more than three hours, then turned around at roughly 7,250 m.
It isn't the story I would have liked to tell, but it's the one that taught me the most. At that altitude, alone, without oxygen, being able to make the decision to go back down is a skill that is far too often overlooked.
Two weeks later, on Cholatse (6,440 m), an avalanche swept me away and brutally reminded me that up there, humility, experience and the ability to turn back will always count for more than a summit. I survived a 300 m fall and being buried under the snow. The following day a helicopter flew me to hospital in Kathmandu, and I came home to Switzerland grateful to still be alive. It took me several months to rebuild myself mentally.
The prologue lasted eight years. It is now time to write the first chapter.
In September 2026 I leave for Manaslu (8,163 m), the eighth-highest mountain in the world. It will be my first 8,000 m peak. And it is the first step of a project that will take up the coming decade of my life: climbing all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres, without supplemental oxygen and without a personal Sherpa.
For this expedition I have chosen to join AGA Adventures, the agency founded by mountaineer Adriana Brownlee and Gelje Sherpa. I chose this team because it respects the style in which I want to carry out this project: maximum autonomy at altitude, while keeping a professional logistical and safety framework.
I will attempt the ascent without using supplemental oxygen. Above base camp and up to Camp 4, at around 7,400 metres, I will manage my own acclimatisation rotations, my own gear, my own load carrying, my own food and my own progression, without personal assistance.
As in every organised expedition on this mountain, I will nevertheless benefit from the collective logistics that are indispensable there: permits, the approach trek, base camp, communications, local staff and the fixed ropes installed along the route.
One detail I want to state clearly, because it matters.
For this first 8,000 m peak, having never climbed above 7,250 m, and on the recommendation of Adriana and Gelje, I have chosen to climb with an additional "safety net". On the final push only, between Camp 4 (7,400 m) and the summit, a Sherpa from the team will walk behind me, carrying an oxygen bottle intended exclusively for a life-threatening emergency.
He will not help me in any way and will not assist me in my progression. After what happened last November, I would rather not let pride make me underestimate the mountain, and I prefer to see how my body reacts at 8,000 m before setting off with no safety net at all.
The goal remains clear: to reach the summit of Manaslu without ever using that bottle and, above all, to come home to the people I love.
WHY THIS FUNDRAISER?
Choosing to climb without a personal Sherpa and without supplemental oxygen does reduce some costs, but an expedition on this scale remains extremely expensive.
The total budget for the project is now estimated at around CHF 17,900.
- Flights — CHF 1,500: Return flights between Zurich and Kathmandu, with a supplement allowing me to carry roughly 50 kilos of expedition equipment.
- AGA Adventures — CHF 9,800: The agency package, calculated at the current dollar exchange rate, includes the nights in Kathmandu, the approach trek, the "Base Camp Service", expedition logistics, base camp services, local staff, the wages of the camp and kitchen assistants, as well as organising the safety arrangement planned between Camp 4 and the summit.
- Equipment and preparation — CHF 4,000: The specific gear needed for training in the months before departure, along with the equipment that is indispensable on the expedition itself: very-high-altitude gear, extreme-cold sleeping equipment, tent, stove, expedition clothing, batteries and technical equipment. A large part of this material can be reused on my future expeditions. It is therefore not only an expense for Manaslu, but a long-term investment in the project as a whole.
- Visa — CHF 100: The cost of the visa allowing a stay in Nepal of up to 90 days.
- Insurance and medical preparation — CHF 1,000: Insurance covering Himalayan mountaineering, along with search, rescue and evacuation operations at very high altitude. This amount also includes the examinations and the medical certificate required for the expedition.
- Reserve and contingencies — CHF 1,500: A reserve for unforeseen expenses during the expedition. This sum also includes a possible summit bonus of USD 500 for the safety Sherpa, only if we reach the summit.
TOTAL: CHF 17,900
SUPPORTING A DREAM
This fundraiser is not about asking others to carry this dream in my place. No summit can be bought or guaranteed. I take on a large part of it personally, financially as well as humanly, through my work, my training and the choices this project imposes on me every single day.
You are not funding a summit. But if my approach speaks to you, if you recognise yourself in the values it stands for, or if you simply enjoy being able to follow and share this adventure, every contribution is welcome.
Five or ten francs is already a real gesture of support.
And if you can't contribute financially, sharing this fundraiser will help me enormously.
DONATIONS BY TWINT
For people living in Switzerland, it is also possible to contribute directly by TWINT to: 079 749 27 96
This avoids the platform's transaction fees. Please write "MANASLU" together with your name or a nickname in the message. Every donation received by TWINT will be added manually to the fundraiser as an offline donation, so that the total amount stays visible and transparent.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who decides to write part of this first chapter with me.
I can promise you that I will give everything to be worthy of this chance ... and that coming home will always remain the priority.

DEUTSCHE VERSION
Hallo!
Mein Instagram : simon.niklaus_ (hier klicken)
Simon
