Heather Chow is a medical student that started MamaMimicry,  a cute, cuddly product that provides therapeutic relief to premature babies in the NICU through mimicking the babies mother.  Click Here to Watch the MamaMimicry Video to learn more.

Heather has been working with Project Doing Good to connect her idea with the resources to make it a reality.   They were able to help the MamaMimicry team to find support from the renowned product design firm StudioRed.  They are now looking to raise 10K through your donations and out of their own pocket, in order to create the first prototypes.  They are working with medical professionals that will use these prototypes for a trial period at several NICU's and serve to collect data to prove the product really improves various health markers of these preemie babies.

The Need:
Premature babies are born into a lot of stress. They can’t be held by their mothers as soon or often as healthy-born babies; they are immuno-compromised; and their organs including their lungs are often underdeveloped. As a result, they usually have to spend the beginning days to months of their lives in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Here, they are hooked up to wires that monitor their heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygenation levels. They also have IVs that help to deliver medication and fluids throughout their tiny bodies. One can imagine that being in a new strange place, in the absence of their mother’s womb or her warm and loving caress, and hooked up with wires to machines, can induce a lot of stress. Premature babies often cry and tug on the wires and IVs that are trying to help them in their early days of development.

Doctors in Denmark have observed that babies who cuddled with similar crocheted items had improved breathing, a more regular heartbeat, and better oxygenation levels.

The MamaMimicry prototype will collect data and be able to prove just exactly how these babies health is improved.
