Mama Lee & Mayly to Donate to Poor in Cambodia

Mayly Tao is a Khmer, Thai, and Teochew Chinese Asian American born to Khmer refugee parents who arrived in America to start a new life. Her uncle, Ted Ngoy, sponsored hundreds of Cambodians to come to America and helped them manage and own their own donut shops. She recently sold her family’s bakery after her mom decided to retire after celebrating 40 years in business at DK's Donuts & Bakery in Santa Monica, CA.

 

One of my dreams has always been to document my mom's story. Now that she's retired, we found some time to sit down and discuss more than the donut empire that she's created- it's about the generation that existed before mine and preserving it for generations to come. The book tells of how my mother endured challenge after challenge- the Khmer Rouge and how it overtook her hometown in Cambodia, her journey during the Communist and rogue rule, coming to America, and doing business without any knowledge of English.

 

You may have seen a snippet of her story in "The Donut King Film" but this is an extension to a more fuller detailed story of a real nonfiction account of my mom's life. Our hopes is if you could support by donating anything you can so we can get this book published ASAP, and she can potentially do a book tour!

 

When we had the shop until now, we've received unwavering support and we're asking if you could help solidify this dream for her. I've finally published her book, and we will be donating to the community in Cambodia for our temple opening in December 2022. We will be donating rice, water, supplies, and basic necessities for the poorest in the community.
