Mama packs for Leparua, Kenya

Donation protected
This page is dedicated to raising funds for mama packs for the clinic in Leparua, Kenya.

What is a mama pack?
A mama pack is a kit of essential items for post-birth care. The package includes items for the mom and baby.

Why is this important?
Mothers come to the clinic to give birth with nothing but the clothes on their back and maybe a piece of cloth to wrap the baby in. Often, the mothers are very young and many give birth on the long walk to the clinic. Some mothers, who are in labor, walk for hours, encountering dangerous wildlife, in order to get to the clinic.

Contents of a mama pack :
  • Baby clothes
  • Baby blanket
  • multi purpose soap
  • Vaseline for the baby's skin
  • Wash bassin
  • 2 pairs of women's underwear - most women in this community don't wear underwear but they are needed in order to keep a pad in place for postpartum bleeding
  • Diras - a loose lightweight dress, this is important as the new mothers often have nothing clean and comfortable to wear on the long walk home (and while their body heals)
  • A lesso - a piece of cloth used to carry the baby
  • A reusable waterproof bag
  • An educational pamphlet in swahili (with illustrations) showing different types of contraception as well as symptoms in the mother and baby that necessitate a visit to the closest medical facility (ex. newborn has a fever, mother is bleeding profusely, etc.)

  • NEW ADDITION: I have received feedback from the clinic regarding an additional product for the mama packs - Reusable diapers! We are currently looking for vendors who will give us a good price for a bulk order.

Where is Leparua?
Leparua is a small community next to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Isiolo County, Kenya. It is very isolated and serves a community that is sprawled out over large distances.

What services does the clinic provide?
The clinic is a level 2 dispensary, this means they provide basic medical care. However, due to its remote location, the clinic is often the only medical resource accessible to a large portion of the community. Therefore, the nurse who runs the clinic delivers babies, sutures severe wounds, prescribes medication and handles countless complex medical cases.

How will the funds be used?
100% of the funds raised will go to buying supplies for the mama packs and assuring that said supplies arrives safely at the clinic.
We are expecting about 200 births in the coming year at the Leparua clinic. Around 40 mama packs have been provided for new mothers since September.

**Kenya is currently experiencing torrential rains after a 4 year drought so leaving the community for medical assistance is simply not possible, this puts even more pressure on the clinic**
