Help Malden Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Final update:

Malden Neighbors Helping Neighbors has recently celebrated our first anniversary. MNHN organizer A.J. has put together a beautiful video showcasing what we've accomplished over the past year: https://www.facebook.com/groups/maldenneighborshelping/permalink/512447776811478

Your donations helped make all of this possible: the grocery deliveries, the utility bill payments, the eviction prevention, and so much more. Thank you for being a part of this!

As we have just crossed the $15,000 goal, we are drawing our initial GoFundMe campaign to a close. However, we do intend to continue facilitating Malden's neighbors helping each other. Many of us already faced food insecurity, social isolation, and housing challenges even before COVID shut everything down. We want Malden to be a community where people can talk about these concerns, and take direction action to address them together.

We encourage you to join our Facebook group to connect with neighbors: https://www.facebook.com/groups/maldenneighborshelping

We also have a website with information on what we offer, and a form to sign up to get involved as a volunteer: https://maldenneighbors.org/

If you have any neighbors who don't use the Internet, they can get help by calling our hotline and leave a message: (781) [phone redacted].

Thank you for your support, and thank you for helping keep your neighbors safe and healthy during this pandemic!

Malden Neighbors Helping Neighbors  (MNHN) is a network of neighborhood volunteers who came together to help Maldonians get through the COVID-19 pandemic. In the four months since our network formed, we have onboarded hundreds of volunteers whose hard work is clear from the stats:

• Responded to aid requests from over 400 households in Malden
• Coordinated sewing and distribution of over 2,000 cloth masks to the community
• Delivered 700 laptops and internet hotspots to Malden students
• Connected more than 1500 people through our Facebook community

We are proud of our work so far, but we also know that our greatest challenges are still ahead of us. Maldonians impacted by COVID-19 shutdowns saw their incomes disappear overnight yet still have to pay for food, medicine, rent, and utilities. Every day, we continue to receive new aid requests through our phone line, website, and Facebook group.

One of MNHN's most important roles is helping our neighbors navigate safety nets they've never had to use until now: non-profits, city and state aid, federal programs, and more. We learn about each neighbor's unique situation and figure out which partners could help them:

Malden Neighbors Helping Neighbors has been an exceptional and collaborative resource to our cases/contacts in Malden. Their all volunteer organization has been key to serving our most challenging cases navigating COVID-19 quarantine/isolation. We appreciate their close partnership with Bread of Life, the YMCA, and Greater Malden Asian American Community Coalition (GMAACC). It is a relief to know Malden citizens have them as a support during isolation/quarantine and after they leave our care in the [Community Tracing Collaborative (CTC)]"

- Eric Hansen, Director of External Relations, Partners In Health

But our nation's social services have gaps, and those gaps only widen as applications surge and funding dries up. This is the other part of what MNHN does: filling those gaps by connecting nearby neighbors who can provide timely and direct aid. That could be paying for an elder's medication today, instead of after a lengthy qualification and approval process. It could be bringing cleaning supplies to a family isolated because of a COVID-19 diagnosis. That could be paying an unemployed Maldonian's internet bill so they can interview for a new job over Zoom. It could be negotiating a back payment to a landlord so a tenant's family isn't at risk when the eviction moratorium ends.

Some of those needs are small and some of them are big, but all of them are important to someone. We always do what we can to help, but every day we encounter situations where we lack the resources to help our neighbors. Whenever that happens we make a note, and our sincere hope is that this fundraiser lets us go back to every single one of our neighbors to say,
"We found a way to help you after all."

We know that this is a hard time to ask for money, and we intend to honor your donation by using it only where it will have the most impact. Since we are a volunteer network, we have no paid employees or salaries and our operational expenses are minimal. Every cent that we raise will go to our mission of keeping everyone in Malden healthy and housed.

Other ways to donate money

The best way to make an impact is to donate through this GoFundMe and to share it on your own social media accounts. But if you don't or can't use GoFundMe, you can still donate. Financial transparency

Monetary donations to Malden Neighbors Helping Neighbors will be stored in the bank account of our fiscal sponsor, Malden Community Fund Committee, Inc. They are a Massachusetts non-profit organization, but do not have federal 501c(3) status at this time, so donations are not tax-deductible.
