I am a single mom of two, seeking assistance to complete urgent home repairs. My youngest daughter became disabled at just three months old due to uncontrollable seizures, which left her blind, quadriplegic, tube-fed, and nonverbal. Shortly after her diagnosis, my husband developed a drug addiction, which led to our divorce. When my children were in danger, I left our home with only a couple of suitcases and my daughter’s medication, leaving behind all of our belongings and her medical equipment.

Although the court awarded me the home, my ex-husband refused to leave. During that time, he sold most of our belongings for drugs, moved in his girlfriend and friends who were also doing drugs in the home, and caused extensive damage to the property, all while I continued paying the mortgage and bills to prevent foreclosure. Nearly a year later, I was finally able to return, only to find the house damaged. It took another year of court battles and significant legal fees to obtain some justice, but he has refused to pay restitution.

I’ve invested everything I have into making our home livable again, but between the legal costs, my daughter’s ongoing hospitalizations and medical appointments, and a recent car breakdown, I’m now struggling to even cover basic bills. My garage door has a hole that led to a rat infestation in the garage, and I urgently need pest control and an electrician due to dangerous wiring.

Because of my daughter’s condition, she cannot attend public school. She has been accepted into a homebound program where a teacher and nurse will come to our home, but to make that possible, I need to make the house safe and functional. Currently, I don’t have kitchen countertops, my baseboards remain unfinished, and my gutted bathroom still needs to be completed and made handicap accessible.
