Make The Melodic Distraction Studio Safe

Hey folks! We’re excited to announce that we will be going back to our lovely studio on Jamaica Street on August 10th 2020. This Saturday we will be posting a full breakdown of all the measures we will be putting in place, as well as guidelines for all our fine hosts to follow to keep them and our producers safe whilst they enjoy being back in the studio.
Before we do this, we want to reach out to our lovely community for help! With the studio being a small space and the nature of radio broadcasting having a lot of contact points, ensuring it is a safe space for all has proved to be expensive - reaching far beyond our budgets.
On top of all the measures we will be announcing on Saturday in order to make the studio as safe as possible we’ve had to:
- Buy Perspex to separate hosts from the producers
- Borrow the services of van drivers to move things about
- Buy enough mic shields to change between each show
- Buy hand sanitiser and create cleaning points
- Buy enough disposable masks to last us the year
- Buy gloves for those who wish to wear them
- Buy an infrared thermometer
- Buy cleaning products, sprays and cloths as well as other protective measures to avoid cross contamination between hosts
- Put time towards continually reviewing the success of our protocol and adapt accordingly - which may add further expenditures down the line
As a result this has ended up costing us roughly £1,320 to ensure we’re doing all we can to make the studio a safe and professional space while still being as fun and relaxing for everyone as it was before. Consider it the extra steps we are taking to make a new, but still nice, normal. We’re reaching out to see if those who can afford it would help us make these purchases to ensure we’re not in heaps of debt when reopening the station. Whether it’s £1 or £10, anything helps us eat away at these costs and will be hugely appreciated!
It’s important to say that we don’t expect everyone to do this and please please please don’t feel you have to. This is only for those who are in a position to do so and we totally understand that Covid-19 or other situations may not allow people to do this. Please do not worry!
If we do find that we receive more donations than the required amount, we will put this money towards purchasing an additional Ipad for the studio to further improve the safety between hosts and producers. Following this, any extra money will be donated to Stop Hate UK.
Additionally, if anyone knows of any funding to prepare places for Covid-19 safety then also let us know as we can also apply for these to ease the financial pressures. We have searched quite extensively but have been unable to find anything of relevance.
Remember that we will be providing a full briefing document this Saturday ahead of opening the studio on the 10th August. In the meantime, we’d recommend that hosts who can, should buy their own microphone foam protectors to ensure absolute safety.
We will be providing these but it’s always better to have your own and they aren’t too expensive! We’ve provided a few links below of ones that fit our microphones that we’d recommend!
