About Kindness Café
Kindness Café is an organization aimed to solve both the food waste and food insecurity problems in Windsor, Ontario. Kindness Café collects and enhances surplus food from Windsor markets and restaurants and provides it back to the community, who can purchase a meal using the Pay-As-You-Feel concept. Simply pay as you like, or enjoy your meal for free! Then, we compost and donate our own surplus to local livestock to continue the food cycle. Ultimately, Kindness Cafe is a movement aimed to achieve zero food waste in Windsor, Ontario, and one day across the whole world!
Why Crowd Fund?
We're super excited for our transition into Phase Two of business operations!
In Phase One, we used to operate as a social enterprise. Now we're shifting to a non-profit model to achieve charitable status! This means that all future donations will be tax-deductible - helping you help us.
In Phase One, we used to operate our pop-ups only in locations that provided us space because we did not have any of our own. We also sometimes couldn't accept food donations from the community because we didn't have a place to store them. But now, thanks to our partnership with Cook-Up we will have accessible kitchen and storage space, as well as a friendly restaurant space. We will also be able to accept food donations at any time!
In Phase One, our team consisted only of the Founder, but as tasks are adding up, our team is growing! In Phase Two, we are adding a new directorship position to oversee business operations and to soon add new members to the Kindness Café family!
Your generous donation will generate several new, helpful changes that will help us feed our community the way we do it best.
A detailed list of all of our expenses will be viewable below.
Our Story:

Ola Ahmed, Founder of Kindness Café
My name is Ola Ahmed and I am an international student, moving from Egypt to Canada for my graduate degree. Back home, my mother cooked frequently for friends and family. Sadly, we always threw out the remaining food after only one day of eating it. However, when I used to walk the streets of Cairo with my friends, I always used to see people eating out of the garbage. Even as a child, this didn’t sit well with me.
After moving to Canada, I worked as a barista at a franchised coffee shop. On the first night of work, my supervisor instructed me to dump all the remaining food from the day into the garbage, including food that was still in its wrapping paper! The coffee shop was located in a lower-income area of Windsor, so there were usually a couple people waiting at the dumpster for me to drop the food in it. It broke my heart to see the same food problem in a country of such wealth and opportunity.
I then realized that food waste is not just a local problem, but world-wide problem. Since then, I promised myself to find a way to rescue fresh, surplus food from local businesses, and to redistribute meals to those who agree that we can do much better to uphold food security. My aim wasn’t just to start a business, but to start a conscious movement where people would be aware and limit their own food waste.
… and thus Kindness Cafe was born!
