Make it Right for New Bethel Baptist Church

So many of us are watching the news about George Floyd in paralyzed horror. While that tragedy feels so far away, the frustration and anger is chokingly close.

Racism is everywhere in America. And on April 28th at 12:36 am, it happened on the corner of Brooks and 5th right here in Venice, CA.

The guy in this picture casually walks up to the New Bethel Baptist Church - a historic black church - and smashes four, 70-year old stained glass windows. Clearly it was done with purpose. Clearly, the guy targeted a black church. And clearly, as he sauntered off down the street, he had no fear.  (Video files in link below)

Pastor Marvis Davis, who has been the pastor of New Bethel for 34 years, believes this was a hate crime. I agree with him.

If you’re like me, you're feeling helpless, frustrated and repulsed by the racism we experience every single day in America. So let’s do something about it. Let’s unite to support Pastor Davis and the entire New Bethel congregation. Let’s come together as a community to repair these windows. And let’s work together to catch this guy and make sure he knows that racism does not go unchecked on our watch.

It will cost just $2000 to repair and replace those four windows. Pastor Davis has already talked with Divine Stained Glass about what it will take and as soon as we can raise the funds, they're ready to repair the windows.

And once we can all safely gather again, I encourage us all to visit New Bethel Baptist Church.  Pastor Davis is a gem and his congregants are welcoming, loving and inclusive. It’s what we all need now more than ever.
