Hello! My name is Jasmine and I'm raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and for my lovely mum, Annette.
Annette was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, whilst me and my younger sister were at secondary school. She battled through surgeries, radiotherapy and monthly injections during treatment, whilst working a full-time job and experiencing extreme fatigue. It was an incredibly difficult time for her, and we did everything we could to lift her spirits and make daily life easier, despite me and my sister being young kids and my dad also working full-time. We could see the mental toll that cancer took on both her physical and mental health, and how frustrating it was for her that her illness was a barrier to doing the things she loves, such as hiking in the mountains or spending time with family and friends. It was so upsetting to see my mum, our rock and main support, struggle so much. Macmillan provided counselling and Annette joined a support group in Newark with other people facing a similar experience, where they could talk about their journey, mental health, and have a laugh during a difficult time. She has worked so hard to get where she is now and to improve her health to be where it was before she was ill. Thankfully, this April, she is out of remission and is officially cancer free!
My mum is the strongest person I know, and her courage to fight this illness and to not let it define her is so inspirational.
This June, me and my parents will be hiking the Inka Trail in Machu Picchu, Peru, to celebrate this milestone and raise some money for a great charity that supported my mum right through her journey.
Any donation would be greatly appreciated!! (All funds go directly to the charity)
We've also recently experienced some other family illnesses, so I would also like to help raise some money in memory of Uncle Stanley.
I am also taking this opportunity to also raise awareness for the support that Macmillan provides, for people diagnosed with cancer, and their family. It was a really challenging time for me and my family, and I believe that little extra support, from friends to therapy, really helped keep me going so that I could continue to show up for my family. You are not alone!
