*This fundraising campaign is raising funds on behalf of the Association of small farmers: Amanu - Educação, Ecologia e Solidariedade (Amanu - Education, Ecology, and Solidarity).

Hello there, welcome to our page!
We are glad to share with you an enthusiastic initiative and invite you to join us in our achievements =)

Come collaborate with the Macaúba project: A community-driven project that encourages sustainable production and income generation for small farmers, and safeguards culture and traditional practices, while conserving and restoring the local ecosystem!

Where is it?

In the town of Jaboticatubas, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the community-based organization of agro-ecological farmers, called Amanu, has carried out projects for rural sustainable development in the region since 2008. One of them is the Macaúba project.

The Macaúba (Acrocomia aculeata) is a native palm tree in the Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah). This species is abundant in Jaboticatubas, and part of the traditional ecological knowledge and practices of local rural communities. They produce artisanal oils extracted from the kernel and the pulp of the fruits. These oils are used for cooking, as medicine, or to produce cosmetics and other products, because nothing is lost from fruit!

What is the project about?

The project aims to promote the reforestation of degraded areas of Cerrado with macaúba and other native species in agroforestry systems. On top of that, it seeks to promote the processing of Macaúba coconut into a variety of products in a community agroindustry, which will provide income generation for more than 150 families of small farmers.

The community’s efforts to protect this species and its associated traditional knowledge made the international organization “Slow Food” integrate the Jaboticatubas Macaúba coconut into the Ark of Taste. It is a living catalog of delicious and distinctive foods facing extinction. By identifying and championing these foods, Slow Food helps keep them in production and on our plates. What is this fundraising campaign goal?

The small farmers have been granted the machinery and collectively built the facility for processing macaúba products and other native fruits called: “Casa Comunitária do Coco Macaúba” (The Macaúba Coconut Community House). See the video and pictures below:

However, for this agroindustry to start its operation the shed still needs the construction of some annexes, such as the office, laboratory, and changing rooms. We hope to raise 20,000 euros to cover all the costs involved in this construction.

Your donations will enable us to finish the improvements in the agroindustry shed, start processing native fruits, and generate income for more than 150 families of small farmers.
