Gowanuslands.org Park Poll

Gowanuslands.org is raising $5k to commission a professional public opinion poll to assess community interest in creating a neighborhood park on Public Place, a vacant, six-acre city-owned plot of land along the west side of the Gowanus Canal located at Smith Street and 5th Street.

The Public Place site was protected by the City in 1974 for open space and recreational uses, but the site has sat vacant due to pollution on the site from the gas plant formerly located there.  National Grid (legacy owner of the gas plant) is currently conducting a site cleanup.

Gowanuslands.org will convey the results of the public opinion poll the Department of City Planning and local elected officials, to help build support for creation of a world-class neighborhood park on the site, which will help address a critical shortage of quality public open green space in the neighborhood.
