Fernando Romero was born on September 7, 1964 in Mexico City, Mexico. He discovered his passion for soccer from an early age and excelled in the sport. He made the academy for the professional team Cruz Azul and played for the reserve team. In 1993, Fernando immigrated to the U.S. seeking life-saving treatment for his son Adrian’s polycystic kidney disease. Fernando was quickly embraced by the soccer community in Omaha and was a pivotal player for the Omaha Flames indoor team.
Fernando’s life was defined by his generosity and selflessness. On August 4, 2002, Fernando donated his kidney to his 12-year old son, Adrian. Adrian lovingly calls this day his “second birth date”.
Fernando started a youth soccer team called the Omaha Raptors, which his son Adrian now coaches. Many of the players could not afford the league fees or uniforms, but Fernando always took care of them. His priority was to ensure every kid could play, have fun, and be a part of a team.
Fernando was diagnosed with cancer six years ago. It started in the kidney and spread to his liver, lungs, bones, and brain. He continued to coach and play soccer for as long as his body would allow. He remained humble in the face of hardship and lived every day with gratitude.
Fernando passed away at his home on March 12, 2021. He is survived by his wife, three sons, parents, many friends and family, and a loving soccer community. We will remember him for his humility, loyalty, and courage.
