Hi, my name is Jess and I'm the aunty of little Luna Rose Staib.
Luna was born December 16th 10.14am via elective C-Section due to gestational diabetes, uncontrolled fasting levels with high amounts of insulin & having too much fluid around her (polyhydramnios). Mums surgery went well, no problems, but once Luna arrived she was very limp, barely made a peep & needed oxygen. The drs said to mum that if Luna wasnt taken out when she was, she probably wouldn’t been here today. Luna was taken to the Hervey Bay nursery where she was put onto CPAP, all of the monitors & fluids, jaundice & still having problems breathing so they did a scan on her heart & lungs where they discovered she had a whole in her heart.
Luna had her first helicopter ride & transferred to the Mater Hospital in Brisbane on Sunday, day 3. Where they discovered she has a large ASD & VSD. This was terrifying, as during pregnancy there was many issues but the heart was never mentioned.
Since being in Brisbane Luna have been up & down, everyday is a roller coaster. The drs don’t have answers, which is the hardest part. The waiting game for results is the worst, slowly ticking things off, not Down syndrome, other organs working well, no infection, she just can’t breath properly & are too exhausted from trying to breath that she can’t feed & have a big heart with problems. She has tried to have 3 bottles since she's been born & her latch & suck isn’t an issue, she is just too tired to do it. The Cardiologist think her heart isn’t the issue but now the paediatrician’s are thinking it is. December 27th Luna had a SVT, 280bpm for 30 seconds. Luna has a long road to recovery, with surgery at some stage in her future.
Life inside the NICU is hard, for both Luna and mum & dad. The mental health, the unknown, the frustration, the sitting and waiting, the watching other families come and go and Luna is still there, the heartbreak. But life outside of the NICU still has to go on. Bills, mortgage, insurances, medical expenses, every day life still happens.
To ease the outside stress would be one less thing to worry about for Luna's mum & dad.
Please help this family during such a raw and devastating time.
Beyond grateful for any and all contributions.
