Community Kitchens Oakland

Luka's has launched a food donation program in response to the Covid-19 crisis.  We’re calling it Community Kitchens and the goal is to feed vulnerable communities and keep restaurant workers employed during the Covid-19 crisis.  This is a critical community that was already underserved before this crisis and will continue to need support after.

Here’s how it works:  Funds raised will purchase hot meals from a local restaurants.  Those hot meals are currently distributed by The East Oakland Collective, the Berkeley Free Clinic, People's Breakfast Oakland, The Village, Kerry's Kids and Love and Justice in the Streets.  These community organizations are already set up and distributing meals to the East Oakland and West Oakland unsheltered communities – but they need more!   And it's critical because food sources they relied on have disappeared.

Channeling this giving through Oakland’s restaurants has the important added benefit of supporting Oakland’s restaurants and restaurant workers.  The revenues generated can be used to put cooks and dishwashers back to work to feed their own families, and can help restaurants keep up with their rent and other bills.  Each restaurant is paid $10 for a hot meal they would be proud to serve their customers or family.   There is no administration costs because this is the labor of love from Luka's owners.

As we continue scaling up throughout the crisis we can add more restaurants, more jobs and more meal recipients in more at-risk communities.  And we hope to build an organization that outlasts the crisis and provides ongoing support to our unsheltered community.

While our launch at Luka's was funded by partnerships with our landlord, local offices,  people we've served on boards with, not every restaurant has those resources.  These funds will support that.  We are working on a restaurant expansion plan that balances and supports all areas in Oakland and especially those that are most vulnerable.

Our fiscal sponsor is the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Foundation and their tax ID number is 95-3217684.

We started Luka's 15 years ago with the goal of bringing our community together for food and drinks in a safe and welcoming space.  While we can't be together now, we continue on that mission and are redefining how we serve our community.   Please support.

Together We Are Stronger.   Together Apart.  Oakland Love.
