Help Lucy Salazar Keep Dreaming - DACA legal fund
Donation protected
My name is Lucero (everyone calls me Lucy), and I am a DACA Dreamer. I need your help so I can continue forward with my legal path to American citizenship. DACA/The Dreamer Act is up in the air because of the current administration's desire to destroy it as soon as possible. I'm terrified that I could be torn from my family and the only life I've known if I don't finish this process soon; and I am asking for your help to raise money for legal fees in order finalize the citizenship process.

I was born in Mexico City, but my parents moved to a little town called Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, which is where I grew up. When I was a little girl, my dad came to the United States looking for a better life and future for his family, and while this provided a lot of opportunities for us, being separated from us was not something that he ever wanted. So, I came to the United States during the winter of 1999. I spoke absolutely no English, but I had my family. We were together, and that was all that mattered at the time. After much hard work learning the language and desiring to be the best I could be, I graduated from Townview for Health Professions with honors as a teen mom.
I knew that because of my immigration status, I wouldn’t have the same opportunities as many other people. I also knew that because I was a mom, I had to fight as hard as I could to make a future for my daughter. I wanted to go to college to become a nurse, but because I was undocumented, that was not an option. Still, I kept working hard making minimum wage, and I never gave up.
Thanks to the DACA program, I was able to get a better paying job with amazing benefits; this allowed me to take much better care of my daughter.
The process of becoming a US citizen is very costly. My husband and I have been trying to save up so that we can apply and hopefully start the process. However, something always happens, and we are unable to save much. To complicate matters, my husband was incarcerated in 2015, and I was left alone with all the responsibilities of raising my daughter and maintaining the household. My husband has since paid his debt to society and is a hard working electrician, a dedicated father, and has a renewed relationship with Jesus Christ. He is doing everything he can to help our family grow and become better followers of Christ and neighbors/community members.

Times are becoming more uncertain, and not knowing whether the DACA program is permanent has made me realize how important it is for me to start the process to become a citizen as quickly as possible. I know that as a citizen, I can be an even more productive member of society, and that I have so much more to give this country. My goal is to go to nursing school, and I know that when I finally become a nurse, I will be able to help many, many people, just as God has helped me. I am committed to continuing this journey with God leading the way and with my family by my side.
It would tear my heart apart if I had to be away from my husband and kids, or if our family was somehow separated. My children belong in their country––The United States––and they deserve every single opportunity that this great country has to offer them. Any help you can offer for us to raise funds for to help pay for legal fees related to my becoming a citizen of this country are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your consideration and blessings!
