Did you know there is a proper way to retire the American flag?
Yes, there is actually a U.S. government published Flag Code. The official code stipulates: “When a U.S. flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
Currently in Montgomery, New Jersey, there is no convenient way for residents to deposit U.S. flags for retirement in a respectful and dignified manner.
My Eagle Scout Project endeavors to address this issue by installing a flag retirement container at the Montgomery Township Municipal Center.
To achieve this, I will need the support of the local community, and any other benefactors who wish to champion this effort, through monetary donations.
I aim to raise $2,300 to purchase, install and maintain a flag retirement container.
Once my project has been completed, any additional fundraising proceeds will be donated to my Scout Troop: BSA Troop 850 of Montgomery Township.
