What are we doing?
Five members of Liverpool University Boat Club have committed to cycling from Smithdown Road in Liverpool to the centre of Henley-on-Thames over three days, from 7 to 9 July. This 300 km bike ride takes us well out of the comfort zones of these natural rowers, but we're ready to take on the challenge to raise as much money as possible for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. As an added bonus, our support-van drivers, Harvey and Nancy, will be cycling the same distance on a spin bike, showing that extra bit of commitment to the cause!
Please note that a portion of the money donated will be used to fund the van and basic meals. We have been fortunate in securing free camping pitches from Applecross Fields in Radway and Ted's Farm Camping in Shifnal. We are very grateful for this generosity.
Why are we doing it?
We've been inspired to complete this challenge because we know the fantastic work that the Bone Cancer Research Trust is involved in. Our attention was particularly drawn to the cause last year when one of our most loyal rowers—and now cyclists—Emily experienced her dad, Lee, being diagnosed with bone cancer. Lee was operated on and underwent months of difficult rehabilitation. Luckily, he has recovered well and is enjoying getting back into normal life.
It is imperative, however, that lessons are learned following Lee's experience, as for over five months he was wrongly diagnosed, being told he had sciatica. This is why the work of the Bone Cancer Research Trust is so important: they raise awareness of the cancer, research methods of treatment, and support sufferers, providing invaluable services to those in need.
