Hello everyone! As some of you may know my amazing joyfull nephew has to have brain surgery next month. My goal with this go fund me is to get them at least 1 month of bills paid in order for them to be able to stay at home with their boy to help him heal. Jeri and Jon also have two very helpfull and beautiful girls, who are doing their best to help their little brother. Anything and everything could help in this hard time.
Lowen was diagnosed with am arachnoid cyst in 2020. This cyst is attached to his temporal lobe behind his eye. We were told to wait and watch. Most of the time these types of cysts do not grow. We were told to follow up with MRIs once a year just to monitor it. This last August (2021) we had had our annual MRI and found that the cyst had grown exponentially. It is pushing on his temporal lobe and causing pressure and pain. If left to grow it would cause permanent visual deficits as well as developmental deficits. Right now it seems to be affecting his speech and temperament ( I’d be cranky too if I was dealing with constant headaches and pressure in my brain). His speech development stopped progressing in August and we have seen significant regression since then. Our bubbly adventurous boy has needed lots of rest and quiet, but it does also means mom gets a lot more snuggles. Due to this growth Lowen will have to have a cyst fenestration. Which means that a neurosurgeon will go through the skull to gain access to the cyst, he will then open the cyst to relieve pressure and allow the cyst to drain into the existing brain fluid. This is the best and safest option right now. If this does not adequately relieve the pressure we have the option to place a shunt to continually drain the fluid. That is a permanent structure though and we are hoping we can avoid that.
We have several appointments down at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis which is a little more than an hour and a half drive for us. Before surgery he will have a sedated MRI for neural mapping as well as a covid test the Friday before surgery. Thankfully his pre-op exam can be done up at our clinic with our doctor. Surgery is October 25 with a check in time of 6 a.m. The plan from that point forward is to have him in the ICU the first night and in a general hospital room after that for about 5 days. Thankfully both mom and dad can stay with him through this. After that follow ups we’ll bounce back and forth between Children’s and our primary care clinic at home.
Thank you in advance for any and all help. It will all be greatly appriciated.
