Lost in Brixtons campaign for Brixton Soup Kitchen
Brixton Soup Kitchen is community space for homeless people or people in desperate need. The Soup Kitchen provide hot meals and warm clothes, drink and companionship in a warm and friendly environment on a weekly basis. Since 2013 we have served over 125,000 meals either eaten on site or distributed during food drop offs and outreach sessions around London and the UK.
Unfortunately for us the service was designed to maximise social contact for those most vulnerable in our communities who were feeling lonely, isolated and invisible. As a result of the current pandemic we have had to move away from that model and adapt it so as to limit social contact while still providing the basic essentials. This has meant that instead of having the centre open and serving hot food on site, we now have built up a database of vulnerable people (through both old and new referrals) and have been delivering both hot food, non perishables, freezer food, food packs and other essentials to those most affected by the current emergency. All our volunteers take precautions including wearing PPE and leaving parcels on the doorsteps
