My Mother, Lorraine R. Braxton was truly one of the most amazing people I have ever known. I don’t say this simply as Her Son but as a man who saw this Woman transform her life.
Lorraine faced so many obstacles in her life, from getting pregnant as teenager, working and going to school up until she gave birth. She fell into drugs as a young Mother after graduating and was sent to a commune in California called Synanon to clean up her life. While there she fought hard to have them allow her child move there with her. We left Synanon in 1979 and moved back to New York. My Mother, after her divorce from an abusive husband, found herself homeless, uneducated and broke. She would work two sometimes three jobs (including cleaning houses) to make money to find us a place to live.
My Mother was hired at the. Merrick school district as a Custodian. She was the first Woman and the first person of Color to get that position. She was faced with sexism and racism but she worked her way to Head Custodian in spite of the hardships and long hours. My Mother loved her job, the Kids and the people she worked with.
She suffered a Mini Stroke that made her retire. Faced with many health issues my Mother suffered from depression but she was still so full of love. She moved out California in 2016. She passed away 1/23/2019.
My Mother was one of the most loving people I have ever known, someone who would Great a stranger with a hug and a kiss.
Lorraine never wanted a funeral, she wanted people to celebrate her life, not mourn her death. In honor of my Mother, we have created the Lorraine R. Braxton Transformation Scholarship.
This scholarship will be awarded to Young Ladies who have faced adversity, who have goals, dreams and aspirations And are working towards them. These Young Ladies are people who have pulled themselves out of the worst circumstances and inspire others to do the same. The Awardees are Young Ladies who embody the strength, tenacity and love my Mother exemplified.
On 5/30/19 the first Awardees, Dezire and Erica were presented with the first Lorraine R. Braxton Transformation Scholarship. We hope they are but the first of many.
Thank You for your time and contribution.
