Lopen Liz: 500 km across the Netherlands
Hi everyone! My name is Liz Drotos, an American teacher and researcher living in the Netherlands. I’m currently walking the Pieterpad , the longest continuous trail in the Netherlands. It runs from the north of the country 500 km to my home, Maastricht. The trail is designed with 27 stages , so it will take me roughly a month to complete the trek, and I’m excited to see so much of this beautiful country.
Waarom loop ik? Why am I walking? To raise money for two Dutch organizations doing important work on behalf of children, addressing issue I care about deeply.
War Child Holland provides psychosocial support, education, and protection to children affected by war and conflict. They conduct projects and research within the Netherlands and throughout the world. In my past 10 years of teaching, many of the incredible students I have taught and loved have had to cope with trauma from war. Especially in the wake of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the far-reaching plight of refugees worldwide, I would like my walk to support an organization responding passionately to these issues.
The Adelante school in Valkenburg (near my home in Maastricht) provides exceptional specialized educational support and rehabilitation to children with diverse physical and neurological needs as well as their families. After the devastating flooding in Valkenburg in July , the school must repair significant damages that have left it inaccessible to students. I also want my walk to support this important school in reopening its doors - children with special educational needs have been disproportionally disadvantaged throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and need our support to regain much needed services.
Thank you for following my journey and donating to these two critical causes that are close to my heart. Check back for updates on my progress!
