Stop Longmuir Wind Farm – A Community United
Help Us Protect Longmuir — A Community Fight Started in 2009
On behalf of Longmuir Energy Project Information Centre (LEPIC)
LEPIC has been set up by local residents to provide clear, factual information about the Longmuir Energy Project and to coordinate a community response. This is not a new fight.
It began in 2009, when the first application for this site was submitted under the name Rowantree Wind Farm. A full Scottish Government public inquiry followed. After detailed scrutiny, the Reporter recommended refusal, and Scottish Ministers rejected the development in 2014.
The reasons were clear: unacceptable impacts on nearby homes from noise, significant visual and cumulative landscape harm, and concerns about the Eskdalemuir Seismic Array.
That should have been the end of it.
Instead, a developer is back — on the same hill, with the same constraints, trying for a third time.
Same location. Same problems. Third attempt.
The Longmuir Energy Project is being pushed forward despite:
• Overwhelming opposition in independent community surveys
• A previous government inquiry that found this landscape unsuitable
• Known noise impacts affecting homes and farms
• Major visual and cumulative effects across the Gala Water valley
• Proximity to existing wind farms, repeating the exact issues that led to refusal in 2014
• Ongoing uncertainty and unresolved constraints relating to the Eskdalemuir Seismic Array
• Unproven and questionable biodiversity claims that require proper scrutiny
• A speculative approach, with similar large-scale proposals appearing elsewhere
This is not about opposing renewable energy. This is about stopping the wrong project in the wrong place — again.
Why We Need Your Help
The developer has access to professional consultants, legal teams and significant funding. The community does not.
LEPIC is a volunteer-led group. To ensure local people are properly informed and able to respond, we need to fund a clear, visible and effective campaign across the area.
What Your Donation Will Support
Roadside signs across the community: £20–£100 each
Printed leaflets, flyers and information materials: £200–£500
AI-assisted objection tool (NOW): £210
Professional visualisations to show the true scale and impact of the development
A dedicated website to host evidence, updates and key information: £1,000–£5,000
General campaign materials and outreach to ensure as many people as possible are informed and involved
Further down the line, if this proposal progresses, additional funding may be required for expert input and appeals, including specialist work on noise, landscape, biodiversity and other key areas.
Every contribution strengthens the community’s ability to respond and be heard.
Why It Matters
If Longmuir goes ahead, the Gala Water valley will be industrialised. Homes could be exposed to noise levels already deemed unacceptable at inquiry. The landscape will be permanently altered.
The 2014 decision already showed this site does not have the capacity for a development of this scale. That has not changed. The problems have not disappeared. The turbines are simply larger now.
A Community Worth Defending
This is the third attempt to develop this site. With your support, LEPIC can ensure the community is informed, organised and ready to respond.
If you can donate, thank you. If you cannot, sharing this page helps more than you think.
Together, we can stop Longmuir — again.
