Our Leadership Lincoln Advocates Cohort was tasked with identifying a need in our great city and then creating a way to serve that need. This is where the idea of community refrigerators was born.
The availability of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy items are a luxury for some Lincoln families. Many are unemployed or underemployed, and the pandemic has not done any favors to this growing population of people in need. Although Lincoln has several food banks and pantries, some fear going there for help while others work during the day makes that difficult.
We’re proposing a freestanding outdoor refrigerator providing 24/7, no-questions-asked access to fresh food and produce for all community members. Creating community freedges is a lifeline and beacon of hope for countless families in Lincoln who would otherwise go hungry.
The freedge is also an incredible example of neighbors helping neighbors during a time of great need.
Our goal is to place 5 freedges in Lincoln by summer but we NEED YOUR HELP!
Your generosity will help:
· Purchase the refrigerators and materials to build enclosures so they can withstand the different weather conditions in Nebraska
· Beautification associated with materials for local artists to paint them and showcase their work
· Keep them stocked and provide fuel costs for volunteer drivers
· Minimal printing costs and social media campaign expenses to support public awareness of the freedges.
Please help! Community freedges are only as strong as the support they receive. Together we can reach and feed more and more of Lincoln’s families.
