L.J. Ruth Eagle Scout Project
Donation protected
Hello and thank you for checking out my GoFundMe page.
My name is L.J. Ruth and I have been a member of the Boy Scouts of America since I started as a Cub Scout in first grade. I worked my way through the ranks starting out as a Tiger, Wolf, Bear and finally Webelos. I then crossed over to Boy Scouts where I continued my journey taking on more ranks such as Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life. After 11 years of service, leadership positions and earning all the merit badge requirements, I am ready to leave my Life rank and earn my final rank as an Eagle Scout. The time has come for me to put all that I have learned into action as I continue my journey to becoming an Eagle Scout with Troop 4 in Tampa, FL. The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest rank a Scout can achieve and it's been my dream to have this honor bestowed upon me. It is estimated that only 7% of boys that begin Boy Scouts will achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, however, I am determined to be a part of this prestigious group with your help.
I am extremely honored and excited to share with you my Eagle Scout Project called the: NoTimeToPackSack. This project was chosen for a beneficiary very near and dear to my heart. My project will benefit the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter Alzheimer's Association which serves 16 counties. They do amazing work in the community by providing and enhancing care and support for all those affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health education. My project came about from my personal experiences sadly watching my mom and dad as they cared for our family members who had, or are currently suffering from, Alzheimer's/Dementia. (Eighty-three percent of the help provided to older adults in the US comes from family members, friends and un-paid caregivers.) Alzheimer's takes a devastating toll on caregivers which is why my project focuses on them. I am very passionate about this cause having seen it first hand at home.
The NoTimeToPackSack will consist of 200 comprehensive backpacks that will be pre-filled with all the essential items a Caregiver will need to be prepared for any emergency situation which often includes an unforeseen hospital stay. There is no worse feeling than being in a hospital unprepared. The NoTimeToPackSack will contain items such as a android and apple cell phone charger and cords, travel blanket, pen, notepad, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, hearing aid keeper boxes, individually wrapped masks, toothpaste and toothbrush kits, activity books, bottled water, snacks, emergency paperwork, checklist for important data and forms, etc. In most cases, the ER department or hospital can only tend to the patient and the caregiver is left to fend for themselves. This bag is designed to provide comfort for the caregiver as they care for others which can sometimes be a life or death situation.
My project goal is to provide 200 purple comprehensive bags, more if possible, to the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. These bags will be given to caregivers at workshops, support groups and trade shows, etc. The estimated cost of one pre-filled bag with all the items is $15.00/per bag, hence why I am hoping to raise a minimum of $3,000 to make my 200 bag commitment. I would kindly invite anyone reading my GoFundMe to consider "helping me help others" by donating at least $15.00 which will cover the cost of one pre-filled bag. Of course, feel free to donate more as every $15.00 will add another bag to the cause. Any amount you can donate to my project will be greatly appreciated. With your help we can make this a tremendous success. Any monies raised over the $3,000 goal will go towards making more bags or will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association to help fund research donated on behalf of my project, those who contributed, and the Boy Scouts of America. My project is expected to be done by May 1, 2021.
I also invite any local businesses such as dentists, dermatologists, pediatricians, elder law firms, ALF's, gift shops, etc., that would like to help my Eagle Project please feel free to reach out with donations of your businesses logo'd items for such things like: 200 or fewer - 2 ounce hand lotions; 200 or fewer - 2 ounce hand sanitizers; 200 or fewer - travel sized toothpaste & toothbrushes; 400 - individually wrapped disposable masks; 200 or fewer- small/mini spiral notebooks. I welcome any of these items in any quantities up to 200.
In closing, on a very personal note, both sides of my family have been touched by Alzheimer's/Dementia and it's very tough on all of us. My grandfather had it before he passed away and my grandmother is currently struggling her way through dementia. I have seen, at a moments notice, both of my parents in very scary and stressful situations. Had they been prepared with a NoTimeToPackSack it would have made a difficult circumstance much better. I truly do care about our communities caregivers and want my project to make an impact in their lives.
I would like to express my extreme gratitude to all my Scout leaders, my fellow Scouts and my parents who have helped me along the way to achieving my ultimate goal of becoming an Eagle Scout.
On behalf of the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and the Boy Scouts of America, I thank you for your donations and helping make this possible. And lastly, I thank everyone for the support and encouragement given to me along my path to this exciting moment in my scouting life.
