This November, my son Oliver and I will be travelling to Nakuru, Kenya with Burnley FC in the Community as part of a charity mission supporting local partner schools. In Nakuru, the partner schools support some of the poorest children in the area, with 12 of the 17 schools involved receiving no government funding at all.

The work being carried out there is focused on improving day-to-day life for children through better education, improved infrastructure, food security, and water, sanitation and hygiene projects, and along with other volunteers, we'll be delivering practical, hands-on support that will make a real difference to the safety, wellbeing, and future of the children these schools serve.

As volunteers, we’ll be getting stuck in wherever help is needed, from building and renovation work to supporting children through teaching and sports coaching, with the simple aim of improving school life and creating better environments for children to learn, grow and feel supported.

One of the key priorities is to replace tin-built classrooms with permanent structures, so children have safer, more secure and more suitable places to learn.

For Oliver and me, this trip is about doing something meaningful together. It is about stepping outside our day-to-day lives, rolling up our sleeves and playing our small part in work that leaves a lasting impact. Every child deserves the chance to learn in a safe environment and build a better future, and this mission is helping make that possible.

Oliver and I are aiming to raise £5,000, which will help fund volunteers on the trip and also contribute towards the wider work being carried out on the ground. Any support, however big or small, would mean a huge amount to us and to the charities.
