Little Lili's Fight For Survival in NICU

Donation protected
This page has been set up in support of Lili Wyn Mccartney Thomas, daughter of Lucy and Aaron born prematurely at 26 weeks on the 25th of April 2020 during the Covid-19 Pandemic weighing just 1 pound 14 oz. Lucy experienced tummy pain at home and instinctively drove herself to hospital. Shortly after arriving she experienced placental abruption and Lili was immediately delivered by emergency caesarean.

Lucy’s quick action saved both her and Lili’s life. Following the birth Lucy was very unwell due to significant blood loss in Ysbyty Gwynedd and Lili was rushed from YG to NICU in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. Both of them required blood transfusions. A few days later Lili was so unwell that Lucy was transferred as a patient over to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and once well enough for discharge she was then provided with a parent room in YGC. This has enabled her 24h access to be at Lili’s side in her incubator for the last four weeks apart from two nights where no parent room was available which forced separation and understandably has a significant impact on Lucy’s wellbeing. Yesterday (21/05/2020) Lili was rushed to Alder Hey for surgical intervention in theatre and at this critical time Lucy and Aaron slept in their car at Alder Hey car park where they had one call during the night as Lili was required to be re-intubated again.

Due to Covid-19, Lucy’s other children Owain (10) and Lois (3) have been unable to have contact with their mother or Lili which in addition to the above is also heart breaking for them all. Lucy and Aaron both work for the NHS and today Lucy’s first maternity leave payment was £164 which works out just over £40 a week. At this time, Lucy’s every waking minute is focused on being with Lili which does not leave the head space to navigate any additional financial support that may be available to her. We as a family felt that setting up this page could be a way to show our support at a time of emotional and financial hardship. This would support travel, food and accommodation where required. Lucy has provided Lili with breast milk from within hours of her birth and this along with kangaroo care plays an ongoing supportive role in Lili’s fight for survival. Lucy’s nutrition and physical and mental health are vital for the ongoing effective production of breast milk.

Lucy and Aaron have huge gratitude for all the key workers at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for their outstanding expertise, care and warmth provided to them all as a family over the past 4 weeks. If you are able to make a small donation, this would be hugely appreciated by us as a family. We thank you so much in advance, even just for reading our story. We will be organising a fund raiser in due course for YGC NICU to pay this kindness forward.
