Litter picking for 40days to celebrate my 40th

Hi everyone, my name is Samantha (Sam)

I’m turning 40 soon, and to celebrate the big 4-0 I want to give back.

I’m raising money for a charity that has been a huge support system to me since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2021.

What is MS?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system — the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.
The immune system mistakenly attacks myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibres, disrupting communication between the brain and body.

There is no cure yet, but there are treatments that can slow the disease and help manage symptoms.

My story

In April 2021, I woke up with blurred vision in my left eye. Within days, I completely lost sight in that eye.
A week later I was admitted to hospital and stayed for a week, undergoing countless tests — ECG, CT scan, MRI, lumbar puncture, X-rays, swabs, and more.

I was treated with IV steroids but sadly had an anaphylactic shock, so was switched to tablet steroids. Thankfully, my eyesight gradually returned.

In August 2021, I was officially diagnosed with MS.

I have lesions on my brain, and the vision loss was caused by optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve). Other symptoms I experience — frequent urination, recurring cold sores, fatigue, and brain fog — are also linked to MS.

I now receive an infusion every six months to help slow the progression of the disease.

Why the MS Therapy Centre?

Before my diagnosis, I unknowingly drove past the MS Therapy Centre every single day. Once I was diagnosed and found it, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief.

The staff are incredible. People with MS can visit for a coffee and a chat, wellbeing treatments, or oxygen therapy. The Centre also hosts events throughout the year, creating a real sense of community.

They helped me understand my condition and, most importantly, helped me feel less alone.

They are also absolutely amazing with my mum, who lives with Parkinson’s disease.

The MS Therapy Centre is charity-based, and every penny raised goes directly towards supporting people living with the physical and psychological effects of long-term debilitating conditions and short-term traumas.

The challenge

My fundraising goal is £400.
If I hit this target during the 40 days, I’ll do a little pick for the remaining days… in fancy dress

I’ll be posting along the way — and you’re more than welcome to join me!

Thank you so much for reading, sharing, donating, or supporting in any way
