Lisa: Elliot was sick and hopelessly addicted to heroin. We were so in love, but our love couldn’t help him. When Elliot went to prison for almost three years, our lives changed forever. During his sentence, I started the Instagram account ‘bluebaglife’ as a safe space to share our on-going experiences. The name ‘bluebaglife’ came about when I noticed that the heroin Elliot was using would come wrapped in cut off pieces of blue plastic carrier bags, I used to find small pieces all around the flat we shared. Elliot began writing to me for bluebaglife, from his prison cell.
I knew that our chances of having children were running out, I was entering my 40s. We’d sit and watch children in prison visit halls, and dream of having our own. We just needed to wait.
Since Elliot’s release from prison, ‘bluebaglife’ has taken on a life of its own, it’s now a growing community for the voices of others to connect through sharing, learning, and educating through discussions. This account offers the perspectives of people in prison, released from prison, as well as loved ones supporting, and all who experienced addiction in their lives. We work hard to make sure people feel heard and connected to this growing community.
After trying to have a baby for some time, nothing was happening. We were rushed through to receive IVF (funded by the NHS) but I didn’t respond to the stimulation meds and Elliot was told his sperm have low motility. After day 10 the cycle was cancelled and we were left devastated. We cannot receive further funding to complete a cycle now, due to my age.
My mother was addicted to heroin too and I wasn’t raised by her. I was so scared of motherhood. But I’ve worked on myself and my past, it feels like it’s too late. We’d like to try other options with a fertility clinic, but it’s expensive. Our community all urged us to set this gofundme page up, so we are turning to you for help and going for it. We want to be parents, and we are going to do our best to make sure that we get our little miracle.
