Lillian's Girls Refuge: An Art Film Show

Donation protected
Hi!

Jenna and Ellie here. Together, we work at Lillians (Jenna a volunteer, Ellie a Social Worker).

What is the Lillian Howell Project?
LHP is a refuge in the Inner West that offers accommodation (up to 2 years) a range of services to young women at risk of homelessness. Currently, it houses 8 girls (aged 13-17) and is the ONLY medium-long term housing refuge in the state.

What are we raising money for?
A PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW! WITH PHOTOS EXCLUSIVELY TAKEN BY THE GIRLS OF LILLIANS! The plan, as approved by the girls, is to give each girl a film camera loaded with film. They'll have a month to shoot a roll, snapping whatever speaks to them (as personal or as abstract as they like), and then at the end of the month each roll will be developed. The girls will choose their favourite images to display, and those images will be displayed at a special gallery opening in July/August, where pictures will be for sale and display to the general public. Our aim is to also have a video installation - as requested by the girls.

What’s the aim?
This is a chance for the girls of Lillians to reclaim their stories through photography. Autonomy is key, and at every point they get to have complete control over what they choose to show, and what remains private. It’s also a way to raise awareness of the presence of youth refuges, and the incredible, lovely brilliance of those who reside there. We hope this exhibition will be a lifelong memory for everyone involved, and the film cameras a gift they go back to throughout their lives.

What will the money be spent on?
♡ 8-10 Film Cameras (preferably not disposable, so the girls can have them forever! $50-70 dollars for a regular point and shoot)
♡ One VCR camcorder for a video installation ($80)
♡ 8+ rolls of film ($16.50 per roll)
♡ Developing costs ($15 per roll)
♡ Framing costs (1 print framed per girl... hopefully at a discounted rate)
♡ Gallery/Opening night costs

Any excess funds raised will go straight back into Lillians. The Gallery Show will be a way to raise more money, but this fundraiser is about creating an experience for the girls, and visibility of the refuge in the community.

If you have any questions, or perhaps a way to donate beyond just a donation (film cameras very welcome!), please email [email redacted].
