My sister, Tiffany Akins, was rushed to the hospital a couple of weeks ago with a severe migraine that left her in unbearable pain. A CT scan showed what doctors thought was a brain tumor. For nearly 24 hours, Tiffany believed she had a tumor and was facing surgery. After more testing, they discovered it wasn’t a tumor at all, but something called a pseudo tumor—a condition that mimics all the symptoms of a brain tumor without one actually being there.

To relieve the pressure, they had to do a spinal tap, which thankfully gave her almost instant relief. She was put on several medications and told to follow up with her primary doctor and a neurologist. At her follow-up, her doctor gave her a new medication but also told her something heartbreaking—this condition isn’t going away, and she will likely be on medication for the rest of her life.

This has been an incredibly scary and overwhelming experience for her, and now she’s facing the financial burden of hospital bills, specialist visits, and long-term treatment.
