Hello to all the good people of Cola and generous souls across the nation! There is an opportunity to make an impact in our community this Fourth of July! I’m reaching out in conjunction with the Columbia Fireflies and Executive Vice President, Brad Shank to organize a firework show for the Children’s Hospital. The total cost to facilitate is only $7000!!  All funds are being allocated towards cost of pyrotechnics and permits. Let’s come together to make this happen! Who’s in for the first donation?  This fireworks display is ONLY for the patients and healthcare workers at Prisma Children’s Hospital. Due to recent pandemic spikes in our community, this event is closed to the general public. The original event slated to be hosted by the Fireflies was cancelled due to public health concerns. The Mayor of Columbia has taken a strong stand in limiting the spread of COVID-19 in our community. This is the case for many communities across the nation as 80% of fireworks shows have been cancelled due to health concerns. In addition, any public gathering around the facility will have an impact on the permits that have already been approved and reviewed for safety purposes. The Fire Marshall is adamant that this event is not for the public. We have to maintain certain blast distances and setup appropriate barriers to ensure proper safety precautions are maintained. This is truly an effort to do something special for children and adults who feel isolated and need a seed of hope to keep their healthy spirits fighting whatever adversity is in their current path. I’ve heard multiple stories about children who are in tears about not being able to see the sky light up this year. This event will impact over 100 children currently receiving treatment at the hospital. The adult portion of hospital also faces the field and will be able to experience the same joy. Not to mention all of the true healthcare HEROES working tirelessly to help those under their care. I realize it’s short notice but we have a genuine opportunity to do something amazing for those who need it most during these trying times. Let’s do something impactful today!  The show is slated to begin tonight at 9:15-9:30pm. Make an impact today and Happy Fourth of July to you and your families.
