My youngest son, Brody, is 6 years old. He is smart, funny, imaginative, and has a good heart. Brody also has Autism Spectrum Disorder and struggles with developing positive and meaningful relationships with his peers and educators. It also makes participation in a busy, sensory-filled classroom difficult for him. Brody is primarily nonverbal with about 50 words he uses to express wants and needs.
On 12/4/18, I received a call informing Brody had been abused at school by one of the paraeducators. As a mother, my worse nightmare had come true. The abuse was incredibly disturbing and harmful to Brody, his father and I, his older brother, and other loved ones. Brody's mistreatment has been devastating to his progress. Since the abuse, he has had increased physical aggression and verbal outbursts. His participation in academics and socialization with peers have decreased significantly. We have had to forfeit the progress he had made to focus on helping him cope with frustrations, identify emotional triggers, and crisis prevention. Safety is also of concern as Brody has eloped twice from his classroom. He had not done this prior to the abuse.
I have been reaching out to the Autism Treatment Center of America. I have had several phone consultations over the last few months. I am reading the books, watching the videos, and implementing all the strategies I can. I hope and pray for Brody we can help him recover, start to progress again, and one day thrive.
I am starting this fundraising campaign because I need your help, Brody needs your help. The Autism Treatment Center of America has a five-day group training program for parents on their campus in Massachusetts at the beginning of August. I am going, so I can learn all I can to help Brody. Attending the training in August will also help me get information to his educators on how we can best support Brody before he starts first grade in the fall. I have already made the down payment and could use your help with the remaining balance for the parent training including lodging, meals, and travel expenses.
