My name is Drew P. Brown. I am 16 years old, and a sophomore at Washington Leadership Academy. www.washingtonleadershipacademy.org
I was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I relocated to Washington D.C. when I was 9 years old. I really did not want to move and leave my dad and my friends. But I remember my dad would always tell me how I would have so many more opportunities here in D.C., than in Baton Rouge. He has been right!
The first school I attended in D.C., was Ross Elementary. Then on to Kelly Miller Middle School. Now, I attend this awesome school at WLA. I have done so many truly amazing things here in Washington D.C., that have helped mold me into the young person I am today. I do love going back home to visit my family in Baton Rouge, but, I am now old enough to understand what my dad was talking about 7 years ago.
The amazing opportunities here continue. Earlier this year, my incredible and super cool biology teacher, Dr. Rob, who was once on then, Senator Barack Obama and later on President Obama's first term educational team, recommended me for the LearnServe Abroad program. After a lengthy application process, I was accepted at the beginning of March to go to the African country of Zambia, this summer, from June 23-July 12th.
We have meetings twice a month on Saturdays, which began on March 3rd, and will continue through October after our return. The meetings now are to prepare us for our journey, to Zambia.
The total cost of this trip is $5000.00. My awesome parents, Donovan Brown and Kamaria Mabry, have paid out of pocket, more than $3000.00 of this trip. There is a remainder of $1600.00 left.
I am setting up this GoFundMe account, to help ease the burden on my parents, with the hopes of getting 60 people to donate $25.00, by May 19th, to reach my goal of $1600.00.
I never imagined going to Africa, but, since attending the meetings with my team, seeing pictures and hearing stories of past participants, I am so excited to have the chance to come back from Zambia with stories of my own.
Thank you to everyone who reads my story and makes a donation to this life changing opportunity I have in my very near future. I am grateful to all who contribute.
Thank you,
Drew Patrice Brown
