Imagine being a parent who sends a five-year-old onto a wooden boat at dawn. The lake is dark, the wind unsettled, the water deep. There is no life jacket. But if your child doesn’t go, they miss school, and education is the only chance to escape poverty. This is daily reality for hundreds of children living on the Ssese Islands in Uganda.
Lake Victoria is vast and dangerous. Waves rise suddenly, storms sweep in without warning, crocodiles lurk near the shores. Every month, accidents occur. People drown - fathers, mothers, children. On the islands, everyone knows someone who has been lost to the lake. Yet families have no choice. Out of the 84 islands, only a few have schools or kindergartens. The others don’t, so children must cross the water to learn.
We cannot accept that children risk their lives just to reach school. That’s why we are fundraising for life jackets for kindergarten and primary school children, aged 3 to 13.
A life jacket costs only 10 € (40,000 UGX). For the price of two coffees in Europe, you can protect a child’s life.
This is urgent. Every rainy season brings stronger winds, heavier storms, and higher risks. Children climb into boats no matter what, because their parents want them to learn to read and write. Your donation makes the difference between fear and safety, between risk and protection, between tragedy and hope.
Why your help matters:
- Each life jacket is a shield against drowning.
- Each child protected means one less family living in daily fear.
- Each donation gives children the chance to learn without putting their lives on the line.
