Greetings to our family and friends. We wanted to give you an update on the Stone quarry pit that you generously supported us to bury.
We delayed posting updates because of the excavator we were using got stuck in the pit for about 6 months. It required importing spare parts from China to have it working again which has been a challenge with the Covid-19 pandemic.
We managed to raise $3600 from our friends and family here. Your generous contributions helped us achieve the following;
- We were able to completely drain the pit of stagnant mosquito infested water. Making a huge difference as far as getting rid of the stench that came out of the pit.
- We were able to hire 4 excavators (hired in phases), wheel loader and dump trucks to help bury the pit.
- We had to put trash in the pit first because of the soil or dirt expenses. We added soil on top of the trash which we exhausted from the place we were excavating it from. More soil is actually still needed to completely cover-up the pit because of it’s depth after removing the water.
- We were able to make a trench and water channel so that future flooding of the pit can be avoided.
There is vegetation growing on some parts of the pit that we filled with soil and one can actually walk on the surface without fear of falling or drowning.
However, since we have not yet procured the pit from the owners to turn it into what we envision which is a community playground, it is still challenging. We need to add more soil which requires buying and transportation. People willing to give us some free soil also require trucks to transport it.
We had a good start and we believe we shall accomplish the task. We cannot thank you enough for all the support.
