Life After Drowning: The Story of Aamiin

In the summer of 2021, Aamiin and his friends decided to go to Lake Meridian during the record-breaking heatwave in Washington. Aamiin was swimming with his friends and jumped into a deep area of the lake. They all counted to ten and jumped in the water however once they jumped in everyone but Aamiin did not come back up. His friend heard him say “Help me brother” and his friend jumped in but he was not able to support Aamiins body weight. The four friends were screaming for help however the people who did come offered no assistance and instead took out their phones to record the tragedy. There were no lifeguards on duty as they were just fired because they were “not qualified enough” according to KOMO News report . So the lake was left unattended with no lifeguards on one of the hottest days in Washington state.

Finally, a civilian came to the rescue to assist by pulling Aamiin out of the deep end and started giving him CPR. However, by that time, Aamiin was underwater for 10 MINUTES. He was rushed to the hospital and had to stay in the hospital for about a month, in a coma. He was taken off of life support after it was found he was able to breathe through his lungs leaving the family to see whether or not Aamiin would survive or not. The tragic incident has left Aamiin with Hypoxic-Anoxic brain injury which is similar to a coma, leaving Aamiin to not be able to do anything on his own. Hypoxic-Anoxic brain injury (HAI) is generally marked by an initial loss of consciousness or coma, a condition that looks like sleep but from which a person cannot be awakened. Aamiin will continue to experience lifelong effects from this incident.

Sadly, there are some kids who do not even make it which is why sharing Aamiin's story is just the beginning so that we can bring awareness to drowning but also the aftermath of drowning.

For the money we are going to raise, we are going to help families get the right support for their children when it comes to water. We know and understand that there will be summers similar to our story and we can not prevent that however, we can ensure the safety of kids in water by providing swimming lessons and life vests.

Understanding that swimming lessons are costly, we are creating this fundraiser to make sure that finances are not a barrier to swimming lessons in our community and to be able to provide life vests for kids while educating our community on how to use them. The tragedy of drowning is not only while it's happening but the aftermath of it. By donating you allow us to help the minority community receive swimming lessons and life vests.
