Someone recently asked me: Why are you getting involved in having a mural painted in the children’s rooms at the Trumbull Library? My first thought was because it needs to be done. Because when you walk into the room if the walls could talk they’d say: paint a mural on me. Liven me up. Make me more welcoming. Bring me to life. But, it’s deeper than that.
For more than 10 years I worked as a school teacher. I love learning. I love being out in the community. I love when children have a place where they can be with other kids, be with their families or just be. To me, that place is a library. I also have two small children. I go to the library. We rent books and DVDs, and we participate in children's programs. I think it’s an important place for kids to feel comfortable and be familiar with.
Who is this for?
It’s for the kids. It’s for the town. It’s a place for families to connect in a fun and safe environment. It’s a place for you to bring your grandkids on a rainy afternoon. It’s where you come during the summer to escape the heat. It adds value to our town. It’s for you.
How can you help?
First, you can support the library and its efforts to freshen up by donating. All money raised will be used to paint murals in the children’s play area and children’s programming room. Any additional funds raised will be used for purchasing new toys and programming. But, that’s not all you can do. Then, you can go to the library! Tell your friends. Take your kids. The more action we bring to the library the more action that will be at the library.
When will it happen?
Our goal is to have this project funded and completed by this summer. The children will be able to view the decorations as the artist completes the mural by hand. The library is working to replace the current toys and furniture to match our newly updated space. We will commemorate the completion with a party to celebrate just in time for Summer Reading Kickoff!
What it means
I’m grateful to each and every person who is with me and is willing to be a part of this. If you are reading this and think: Yes! Let’s do this! I thank you. I truly do. But, it’s not just me who’s beaming with gratitude. Elise, the Youth Services Coordinator, and Stefan, the Trumbull Library Director, have had countless meetings with me and now have a permanent smile on their faces. You know who else will be beaming? Each and every child who walks into the children’s library. Hands down. They are the true winners.
