Salvador Ibarra Landeros – Farmworker Leader and President of the CMXDA

Salvador Ibarra Landeros migrated to the United States at the age of 16, working in the fields of Williams, California, for 12 years. The son of a family with 10 siblings, he learned the value of sacrifice early on: waking up at 6 a.m. to help at home and bring lunch to his father before going to school, then working alongside him in the fields until nightfall. Despite the institutional abandonment his people endured, he never stopped reading or dreaming of a movement that would defend them — until he realized that he had to be that leader.

During his visits to Mexico, he met his wife in Zapopan, and they married when he was 25 years old. After the birth of their first child, he returned to the United States for three years to save money and secure a dignified home. Upon his return, he channeled his energy and resources into improving the lives of the most vulnerable in Los Tepetates and neighboring communities. He led monumental projects like the Los Tepetates Road (30 million pesos) and the Antorchista Circuit (9 million), facing threats from local power groups but earning the trust of the people.

For over a decade, Salvador has driven public works projects without holding any official position: water wells, paving, electrification, cultural centers, and more. From 2009 to 2019, he distributed more than 200 tons of fertilizer, seeds, and other supplies each year to humble farmers. His activism paused during the pandemic, but in 2022, after the painful loss of his parents, he found renewed purpose in the fight for agave farmers.

On January 9, 2025, he raised his voice before hundreds of farmers in Tequila, Jalisco. On April 13, he was named President of the Consejo Mexicano del Agave (CMXDA), from which he continues to defend, with dignity, courage, and passion, the forgotten people of rural Mexico.

However, on May 20, 2025, Salvador was illegally arrested and is now facing politically motivated charges for standing up to powerful multinational tequila corporations. He is currently imprisoned alongside Julián Rodríguez Parra, the founder of the CMXDA, who has also been targeted for exposing industry corruption. Their only crime is defending the truth and protecting the dignity of agave farmers.

We call on all defenders of justice to support Salvador and Julián and demand their immediate release. They are the voice of the people — and that voice must not be silenced.

Salvador Ibarra Landeros emigró a los Estados Unidos a los 16 años, trabajando en los campos de Williams, California, durante 12 años. Hijo de una familia de 10 hermanos, aprendió desde joven el valor del sacrificio: se despertaba a las 6 de la mañana para ayudar en casa y llevarle lonche a su padre antes de ir a la escuela, y luego trabajaba junto a él en el campo hasta la noche. A pesar del abandono institucional que vivía su gente, nunca dejó de leer ni de soñar con un movimiento que los defendiera —hasta que entendió que él debía ser ese líder.

Durante sus visitas a México, conoció a su esposa en Zapopan y se casaron cuando tenía 25 años. Tras el nacimiento de su primer hijo, regresó a Estados Unidos durante tres años para ahorrar y asegurar un hogar digno. A su regreso, canalizó su energía y recursos en mejorar la vida de los más necesitados en Los Tepetates y comunidades vecinas. Encabezó proyectos monumentales como la carretera de Los Tepetates (30 millones de pesos) y el Circuito Antorchista (9 millones), enfrentando amenazas de caciques locales, pero ganándose la confianza del pueblo.

Durante más de una década, Salvador ha impulsado obras sin ocupar un cargo público: pozos de agua, pavimentaciones, electrificación, casas de cultura y más. De 2009 a 2019, entregó más de 200 toneladas anuales de fertilizante, semillas y otros insumos a campesinos humildes. Su activismo se pausó durante la pandemia, pero en 2022, tras la dolorosa pérdida de sus padres, encontró nuevo propósito en la lucha por los agaveros.

El 9 de enero de 2025, alzó la voz frente a cientos de campesinos en Tequila, Jalisco. El 13 de abril, fue nombrado presidente del Consejo Mexicano del Agave (CMXDA), desde donde continúa defendiendo con dignidad, valentía y pasión a los olvidados del campo mexicano.

Sin embargo, el 20 de mayo de 2025, Salvador fue detenido ilegalmente y hoy enfrenta cargos motivados políticamente por enfrentarse a poderosas corporaciones transnacionales del tequila. Actualmente se encuentra en prisión junto a Julián Rodríguez Parra, fundador del CMXDA, quien también ha sido perseguido por denunciar la corrupción en la industria. Su único “delito” ha sido defender la verdad y proteger la dignidad de los agaveros.

Hacemos un llamado a todos los defensores de la justicia para apoyar a Salvador y a Julián, y exigir su liberación inmediata. Ellos representan la voz del pueblo —y esa voz no debe ser silenciada.
