LGBTQ Family in Iowa Repair House & Move to Safety
Donation protected
As the US grows increasingly unsafe, the state of Iowa has unfortunately revoked civil rights for trans & nonbinary people, despite being in the vanguard of gender identity rights for the last two decades.
K., a disabled, AuDHD nonbinary person, their spouse, and their three cats need to flee the state for K’s safety, especially post-mastectomy for a cancer mutation that has exposed K. to harassment and threats.
Unfortunately, the house they purchased through a low-income program with extra assistance for a down payment has been heavily damaged in two natural disasters, on top of being sold to them with many hidden issues already. (An image of local storm damage is pictured with this fundraiser.)
For any shot at fleeing the state, they need to repair the damage to sell or possibly rent out the house. They are restricted in access to credit (including city repair loans) because it is now legal to discriminate against K. for loans, housing, and employment.
The most urgent issue: pipe repairs to ensure they have running water, followed by addressing water damage, several windows that still need to be replaced, waterproofing the basement, garage damage, and some HVAC & electric repairs. Estimates are still coming in, but the ones they have are attached.
Thank you for helping a marginalized, LGBTQ couple get to safety.
