It takes a village, and she is a huge part of mine.
And maybe yours too. Lisa helps organize groups to feed the unhoused; she helps collect donations of clothing, food, and blankets. She is a selfless human being who has had a tough year. She literally will give you the sweater off her back and the hat on her head, but the universe has been unkind.
It’s been one thing after another, and she has rolled with it. But it’s finally culminating in an emergency repair due to a very rusted 20” cast iron pipe in her house. Above and beyond the cost of her deductible, the costs to repair the bathroom and the sewage system will exceed $9,000.
In her own words — I heard dripping Monday that sounded like pings on a duct. I was worried about the roof. Followed the sound into the unused bathroom. The tub was overflowing, and the toilet was as well. They removed the toilet and put a camera down after pumping the wastewater out. The main out-of-pocket is replacing 20' of waste pipe that is very old cast iron. The part up to the joint was replaced with PVC 7 years ago. That connection is completely separated now. I also need to add an outdoor sewer line access; they couldn't find one. Hence pulling the toilet off.
The ceramic tiles, subfloor, insulation, and drywall all need to be replaced to prevent mold.
