Dear friends and colleagues,
A member of our community is in need of support.
I'm writing to you today about Mohamed Mandour. In November 2019, Mandour was working as a human rights researcher in his home country of Egypt as the government cracked down on any who exposed its rights violations. Hundreds have been imprisoned in this wave of arrests; the leader of Mandour's organization was thrown in prison and Mandour narrowly escaped. He left behind his job, friends, and family, and he is currently living in exile in Tunisia.
We all know how hard the last year has been. With so many suffering isolation and insecurity due to the pandemic, this crisis has been felt most acutely by those of us who were already facing insecurity.
But - as resilient as ever, Mandour has applied and been accepted to the prestigious M.A in Global Affairs at Notre Dame University, one of the most important programs focusing on the intersection between global affairs and democracy and human rights.
It's critical that someone as brilliant and dedicated as Mandour is able to access the education that will allow him to continue his career, one that strives to achieve a vision that none should have to experience the injustice that he and his colleagues have. But saving money as a political exile is not easy, and as a foreign citizen, Mandour does not have access to critical loans that can help defray tuition and living expenses.
Luckily, that's where we can help. Mandour has already secured a generous scholarship, and he just needs financial support to get him over the finish line. We're setting an ambitious $20,000 dollar goal, but any amount can help. Please consider investing in Mandour's education; your funds will return dividends in making the region and world a safer place for all.
If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out.
