Hunters, this one’s for you. Here’s the story. My name is Randall Boyd, and I signed my son up for the Hunter's Safety Education Course, and last night was his first night. That’s when I met Mike R., the lead instructor. Mike is a sweet old man in his 70s that you can tell has a genuine love for the sport of hunting and gun safety. Mike has been teaching this course for 30 years—three whole decades—and be there as it may, he’s getting older (losing his hearing), and my son’s group of students will be his last group he takes through the course before handing it off to new instructors. My first thought was, wow, how many tragedies has this guy probably averted? How many hunters are out there hunting safely, directly due to his teachings? Thirty years of service to hunting and gun safety alone deserves praise and awards, but my slow clap fell on deaf ears. Here’s the part of his story that compelled me to start this.
In talking with this wonderful man, he reluctantly revealed to me he no longer hunts as much anymore because Social Security is his only income, and gas is just too gosh darn expensive. “Don’t cha knoooo,” and especially, like many of us, his hunting land is way up in the North Woods, der hey! So he just can’t afford to drive up there. That’s when I knew something had to be done. So, I did what we do and started a GoFundMe. I thought let’s see if we can make this thing shoot “safely” to the moon. Let’s make this “Go Wild” Wisconsin. My hope is to be able to present him with something nice on his last day, 9/29/25. Something to maybe get him a few miles on down the road of life. So please, if this story touched you, if you love hunting, and maybe even if the man has impacted your life, donate what you can. Let’s show him the WI gun hunting is a brotherhood, and we appreciate everything he has done for OUR community. (I’ll include his full name and photo once I get his permission)
