Let's Educate the Children!

Bonjour from Yaounde!

ABOUT ME
I'm Eniola Folorunso, a graduate student at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. As part of my graduate program, I am completing a service fellowship in  Yaounde, Cameroon! I am supporting Relais Enfants-Parents du Cameroun, a local non-profit supporting dependents of  convicted citizens, ex-convicts and prison reform initiatives.

ABOUT REPCAM
REPCAM was founded on February 10. 2006,  to facilitate meetings between incarcerated mothers and their children at the Yaounde Central Prison.  Since then, they have expanded to raising awareness for prison reform, reforming the Central Prison School for minor prisoners,  and providing psychological, educational, health and nutritional support to over 800 children. They are solely supported by grants and private donations. You can read more about REPCAM  here.

FUNDRAISING PURPOSE
In the words of  the late Whitney Houston, "I believe that children our are future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside." I've supported nutrition initiatives for the past two weeks and seeing the faces of these children light up is certainly life changing. The funds I plan to raise will go solely to supporting education initiatives for the children. I plan to provide school supplies, after-school programs and books to the children at REPCAM.

WHY EDUCATION?
It has been proven time and time again that early childhood education is the key to the betterment of society. The number one way that we can address the long-term challenges of poverty, of education, is to invest in early childhood education. In Cameroon, where 48% of the population live in extreme poverty, these kids have even been further marginalized because of a broken prison system and the actions of their parents. Children should never be subjected to such hardships and I believe that education has the power to break the poverty cycle and help these kids determine their own future.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards providing necessary education and childhood development activities and supplies for children aged 4 - 15. I'll also be donating $100 of my own personal money towards this initiative. You can follow my progress and stay updated about these initiatives at my blog here.

Thank you so much for supporting the kids. I am very excited to be here for the next two months.
