As a family, this is something we never imagined we would have to do.

Our beloved husband, dad, grandad and friend, Adrian McGuinness, suffered a major stroke whilst travelling through Spain on his way to Fatima in Portugal.

After becoming unwell during his journey, Adrian stopped at a small hotel to rest. The following day, a wonderful lady named Gabriella found him collapsed and unresponsive and immediately raised the alarm.

Thanks to Gabriella's quick actions, Adrian was airlifted by helicopter to hospital in Salamanca, where emergency medical teams worked to save his life. We truly believe that without her intervention, the outcome could have been very different. Gabriella will forever be our angel.

Adrian spent several weeks in hospital in Salamanca, fighting through the aftermath of a devastating stroke which left him paralysed down his left-hand side and facing the biggest challenge of his life.

Thankfully, Adrian's memory remains intact. He recognises his family, understands what is happening around him, and while his speech continues to come and go, there have been encouraging signs along the way. His determination, faith and fighting spirit continue to inspire us every day.

One of the greatest challenges facing our family was bringing Adrian safely home.

Due to the severity of his condition, Adrian could not travel by conventional means and required specialist private medical repatriation, with trained medical professionals caring for him throughout the journey.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of hundreds of people, that journey has now been completed.

Adrian was successfully repatriated to the UK by a specialist medical team and is now receiving care on a stroke unit close to home, surrounded by family, friends and the support network that means so much to him.

While bringing Adrian home was a huge milestone, his recovery journey is only just beginning.

Transparency is very important to our family. Funds raised have contributed directly towards Adrian's specialist medical repatriation and the arrangements required to bring him safely home. Any future funds raised will be used to support Adrian's ongoing recovery, rehabilitation and related needs as he continues this journey.

We remain overwhelmed by the kindness shown to Adrian and our family. What began as our darkest chapter has revealed the very best of humanity. Every donation, share, message and prayer helped make bringing Adrian home possible.
