With the decrease in foot traffic caused by COVID-19 and anti-Asian sentiment, many Chinatown merchants are struggling to stay afloat. These restaurants are mostly cash-only, lack an online web presence and were already closed. For Chinatown and its 7,000 businesses that are largely off the grid, it’s vital we bring them online to weather the economic hardships of COVID and for them to remain competitive with other restaurants.
Back in March 2020, small businesses in Chinatown were already closing quickly due to racism and xenophobia, weeks before the mandated closure. As it turns out, most Chinatown businesses were rejected for government loans due to application requirements that are inequitable to immigrant-run microbusinesses. Unlike many other restaurants, language and technological barriers also prevented many businesses from exploring online options.
Recently, we have signed a deal to give 10 businesses an online platform for $2500. This fund raise completely covers the cost of purchasing domains and website hosting through Wix for these merchant’s sites for one full year. All services to design the layout, develop the brands, create a visual identity and launch the sites are being donated by members of the SCL BD team.
This opportunity would undeniably be the lifeline for these small business owners and all the people they employ. With an online presence, these merchants could expand their customer base immensely and bring in enough revenue to survive.
