Let's Start Community Gardens in Fort Bragg!

Fort Bragg, CA has a long history of community gardening and self-sufficiency. We’re a community full of gardeners, farmers and people passionate about local and sustainable food systems. Through a grassroots community-driven effort, we successfully passed a resolution with the City of Fort Bragg called the Garden Friendly Community Resolution. This resolution acknowledges the importance of home and community gardening for environmental sustainability, community resiliency, personal well being, and also commits to making gardening and gardens more abundant and accessible throughout the City of Fort Bragg.

We are now growing a community garden movement which is branching out in all directions, sharing seeds, resources and starting community gardens. The time is ripe to join the effort to create more gardens and grow more soil, food, pollinator habitat and seed in our community.

In 2020 we formalized ourselves as a board, established fiscal sponsorship, developed our organizational and legal structures and won approval from the City of Fort Bragg and Mendocino Coast Recreation and Parks District for the design for the South Lincoln Street Community Garden located at the CV Starr Center. In the spring of 2021 we engaged our growing network of volunteers and broke-ground, installed the irrigation system, plumbed water storage tanks, constructed an ADA accessible pathway and growing beds and began enriching the soil for our gardeners.

By the Fall of 2021 we will have our toolshed and greenhouse built, our ADA raised beds installed and the garden will be buzzing with friends and families planting their first crops of fruits and vegetables. We will be making compost and developing a rainwater catchment system to offset our water needs and planting pollinator habitat and fruit trees with our community partners.

In 2022 we will be starting work on our next community garden, the South Harbor Drive Community Garden located next to Thanksgiving Coffee near the harbor in Fort Bragg. Our goal is to establish a new community garden every year, so that more of our residents can experience the wonderful benefits we share through growing gardens together.

The $10,000 goal will cover the costs required to start up a new garden and ensure that our minimal operating costs are met. We commit to supporting our local businesses whenever we can. Below are representative costs for bringing up a new garden and running the organization for a year.

Deer Fencing: $1,400
